Lymphedema Pumps
Lymphedema cannot be cured but it can certainly be controlled with the help of therapy. A combined decongestive therapy which includes Manual Lymph Drainage (MLD) is quite effective. The procedure of MLD is a gentle massage technique used to direct the lymphatic fluids to the bloodstream. Sometimes therapists may use lymphedema pumps to do the job, but pumps are an indispensable item for patients who cannot visit a therapist for MLD.
The treatment with a lymphedema pump entails two stages i.e. the preparatory stage and the drainage phase. The lymph glands need to be made ready to receive the lymphatic fluids which will be stimulated by the drainage action of the pump. This must be done in the right manner or the fluid will go into the surrounding tissues rather than the circulatory system, causing further complications. A gentle massage is given to the patient by the therapist so that the system is ready to accept the fluid. If a pump is being used by the patient at home, he would be required to carry out a self-massage for the preparatory phase.
While using the lymphedema pump, an adjustment has to be made in the pressure level so as to suit the individual. The garment must be worn and the affected limb rested in the correct position before activating the pump. With the action of the pump, the excess fluids pooled at one location will begin to move to the blood stream. It is important to wear the compression garment as soon as the MLD session is over. This will ensure that the lymphatic flow goes in the right direction and does not flood the surrounding tissues.
Two kinds of lymphedma pumps generally used are the Sequential Gradient Pump and the FlexiTouch pump. In a Sequential Gradient Pump, air is pushed sequentially into channels that are built into the garment to mimic the flow of lymph from the extremities to the trunk. Here, the preparation of the body needs to be done manually, with a massage. The FlexiTouch Pump is fully automated and takes care of both the phases of MLD, once the setting is done. It is generally an hour-long session, to be done in one sitting.
Purchasing a lymphedema pump may set you back by a good $5000 to $6000. Many insurance companies now reimburse the expense by classifying it as durable medical equipment. The other option is to rent out the pump from a supply store. Lymphedema pumps are a crucial part of therapy, and an essentiality for those who cannot visit a therapist to get treatment. A lymphedema pump is an important product for the treatment of lymphedema and over the years, patients have found it to be very useful and effective. Following the instructions and using the pump regularly ensures that lymphedema is kept in check.
